The Center for Interventional Psychiatry at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital provides treatment options for neuropsychiatric disorders that require specialized care, particularly conditions that are non-responsive to usual treatment.

In the field of psychiatry, first-line treatment usually consists of psychotherapy, or counseling, and medication. Most patients receive benefits and maintain improvement from these standard approaches. In interventional psychiatry, the physician "intervenes," and provides alternative treatments when a patient has not benefited from these standard treatments.
The Center for Interventional Psychiatry specializes in the use of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), and EsKIT (esketamine intranasal therapy). We offer our interventional services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
