A mental health crisis can happen in an instant, and immediate treatment may be needed.
UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, is open 24 hours a day for people of all ages.
We offer a safe and secure treatment setting, including a separate area for child and adolescent patient. Each patient meets with a team of specialty trained physicians, nurses, and clinicians who are committed to providing the best emergency care.
Our Mental Health Emergency Services
At the PES, our services include:
- Evaluations for psychiatric or substance abuse conditions
- Walk-in crisis therapy
- Inpatient admission
- Referral to drug and alcohol programs
- Referral to behavioral health treatment
You do not need a doctor to refer you to the PES. Our doctors, nurses, and staff will work with you to find the right treatment.

resolve Crisis Services
Crisis intervention and avoiding the need for hospitalization are at the heart of resolve Crisis Services. Anyone who lives in Allegheny County can access its services — available 24/7 — regardless of ability to pay or type of crisis. Programs include phone counseling, mobile crisis unit, walk-in center, residential services, and child and adolescent crisis team intervention.

Beaver Crisis Intervention Services supports individuals of all ages experiencing a mental health crisis.

UPMC Altoona’s Crisis Team manages behavioral health crises in a timely manner, where and when community members throughout Blair County need help most.
UPMC Safe Harbor Crisis Services
UPMC Western Behavioral Services at Safe Harbor offers around-the-clock phone, walk-in and community-based crisis intervention services for children, teens, and adults, as well as a crisis residential unit.
