Proxy Access
Manage another UPMC patient's care with Proxy Access in MyUPMC. As a proxy, you can communicate with UPMC doctors, view medical records and test results, manage appointments, and more, all on behalf of another patient through your own MyUPMC account.
To request proxy access:
- Log into MyUPMC
- Select Request Proxy Access from the main menu
- Complete the form, including any required documentation
- Submit
Patients may also request proxy access in a conversation with their provider at an office visit. Requests for proxy access are normally granted within 1-3 business days.
Patients may invite other adults to access their account directly.
To grant proxy access:
-
Log into MyUPMC
- Select Sharing Hub in the main menu
- Choose to share your health information with a Family member, close friend, or caretaker
- Select Manage ongoing access to your MyUPMC account
- Invite friends or family to send an invitation
There are three different types of proxy access available. Read the descriptions below to determine the type of access that’s right for you:
Full Access: A proxy may both view a patient's clinical information and use portal scheduling and messaging features on behalf of the patient.
View Only Access: A proxy may view patient clinical information, but cannot schedule appointments or message doctors.
Scheduling/Messaging Access: A proxy cannot view a patient’s clinical information, but they are able to schedule appointments and message doctors on behalf of the patient.
Pediatric Proxy
If a child was born in a UPMC facility, pediatric proxy access is granted automatically to the birthing parent upon the child’s birth and through to the child’s 18th birthday. If a child was born in a non-UPMC facility, the child’s parents may need to request proxy access at their first newborn visit with a UPMC physician. Pediatric proxy access is automatically removed when a child turns 18. Once the patient has established their own adult account, they can invite family members, close friend, or caretakers to access their account via MyUPMC.
Non-birthing parents, guardians, and caregivers can use the portal's Request Proxy Access form to establish proxy access to a pediatric patient after birth.
Proxy access to pediatric patients aged 13-17 is automatically limited to protect the patient's privacy. Limited access includes:
- Immunization records
- Allergies
- Upcoming appointments
- Medical advice requests to PCP
Growth charts
- Glucose or blood pressure tracking tools
- Eyeglass/contact prescription information
- Contact and administrative information
-
Health insurance information
A teen patient must speak with their physician to return a parent or guardian to full proxy access.
Adolescent Accounts
MyUPMC Adolescent Accounts give teens aged 14-17 a greater chance to ask questions about their health and wellbeing, and confidence to navigate their health care.
An Adolescent Account provides teens with access to:
- Video visits
- Messaging
- Appointment requests
- Test results
Teens can sign up for their own Adolescent Account at their UPMC provider's office with consent from their parent or guardian.
Parents and guardians can request proxy access to their teen’s account; however, to comply with certain laws regarding privacy rights of adolescents, MyUPMC limits the features that a proxy may access for pediatric patients aged 14-17. If your unique situation requires you to maintain full access to their records, you can talk to your child's care team about your needs at an upcoming appointment or contact your provider’s office.
Adolescent Accounts automatically transition to adult accounts upon a teen’s 18th birthday. Parents and guardians will lose proxy access at that time but can reestablish using the Request Proxy Access form in MyUPMC.
