The Center for Interventional Psychiatry at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital provides treatment for psychiatric problems or disorders that do not respond well to other treatments.
We specialize in such conditions as hard-to-treat depression, mania, and schizophrenia, and catatonia.
We provide the following services to both inpatients and outpatients:
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used to address hard-to-treat depression, mania, and schizophrenia. It is also used to treat catatonia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. ECT is considered the most effective treatment option for depression; significant strides have been made in its safety over the last few decades.
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is currently approved for use in hard-to-treat depression. It is less invasive and much better tolerated than other therapies.
- Esketamine intranasal therapy (EsKIT) recently received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for hard-to-treat depression. It can only be administered in an approved treatment setting and includes two hours of close monitoring following intranasal treatment.
If you become a patient at the Center for Interventional Psychiatry, you will maintain your relationship with your personal psychiatrist, who will continue to manage your care. Your treatment will be handled on an outpatient basis as much as possible. Some patients whose symptoms become worse or have unexpected side effects may need to be treated in the hospital.
In addition to these services, we also offer second opinions and consultations for patients who would like to learn more about their treatment options.
