From time to time, everyone has trouble sitting still, paying attention, or controlling impulsive behavior. For some children and adolescents, however, these behaviors interfere with daily life. This can result in difficulties in school, strained relationships, and problems at work.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by struggles with self-regulation of behavior, including:
- Inattention, poor focus, difficulty staying on task, problems with organization, etc.
- Inappropriate impulsivity, acting without thinking, interrupting others, etc.
- Hyperactivity (in some cases), difficulty staying seated, fidgety, feeling restless, etc.
Many children do not “outgrow” ADHD when they reach teenage years. Hyperactive behavior often lessens, but some symptoms may continue into adulthood. Hence, early identification and treatment are extremely important. (Excerpted from Child and Adults with Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder [CHADD])
