Adult Mental Health Programs at UPMC

It can be hard to get through the day when you’re struggling with your mental health. You can get back to yourself with help from UPMC Western Behavioral Health.

Western Behavioral Health offers inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment. Care is available at every stage of treatment and recovery. Our programs for adults ages 18 to 65 provide support for all types of mental health problems:

  • Anxiety.
  • Bipolar disorder.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Depression.
  • Hoarding.
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder.
  • Perinatal or postpartum depression.
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
  • Schizophrenia.
  • Trauma.

Inpatient Mental Health Treatment

Sometimes, it’s important to have a place to stay where you can start the recovery process. UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital and 8 other UPMC hospitals offer inpatient care. Some specialize in treating substance use problems.

Your inpatient hospitalization will be tailored to your needs. It may include individual, family and group therapy, and medicine management. Inpatient care focuses on stabilizing your problem. You can develop a treatment plan and gain the confidence to move forward.

Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

We have many specialty, evidence-based adult outpatient programs to support your mental health needs.

Partial hospitalization

Partial hospitalization provides mental health treatment for serious mental health issues. If your doctor determines that partial hospitalization is best, you’ll get intensive therapy in a hospital setting. But you won’t stay overnight.

Partial hospitalization therapy includes group sessions, individual sessions, and psychiatrist visits. You’ll meet 5 days a week for 5 hours each day. Some programs focus on a particular diagnosis or condition.

If you’ve been in the hospital for mental health reasons, partial hospitalization lets you continue your care. Adult partial hospitalization is available at UPMC Western and other community locations.

Intensive outpatient programs

Are your mental health symptoms negatively affecting your day-to-day life? You may need an increased level of care — but not hospitalization or daily therapy.

Intensive outpatient programs are an alternative to inpatient care. They offer treatment for problems like depression, substance use, and eating disorders. These group-based programs include individual therapy break-out sessions and medicine management with a psychiatrist. You’ll meet 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for 3 to 6 weeks. Some programs focus on a particular diagnosis or condition.

Adult intensive outpatient programs are available at Western and at other community locations.

Outpatient therapy program

In outpatient therapy, you meet in a clinic or office. You may be part of a group or one-to-one therapy sessions, in-person or sometimes virtual. Outpatient therapy is available at Western or a variety of UPMC locations.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

You’ll learn mindfulness techniques and skills in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). These can help you better manage your emotions and stress.

If you have more than one mental health problem, standard therapy and medicines may not have worked. With DBT you’ll learn you healthier ways to cope, manage emotions, and improve your relationships.

Western offers many DBT treatments. They include evidence-based care, individual treatment, skills training, and telephone coaching between sessions. The program includes:

  • One-on-one therapy.
  • Weekly skills training group.
  • Skills coaching phone calls.
  • Medicine management.

The program requires at least 3 hours of therapy a month for 6 months, plus psychiatrist visits.
