Our History

Western Behavioral Health is part of UPMC, a major academic medical center. UPMC also is one of the nation’s leading health care providers.

The center of our services is UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. UPMC Western is nationally ranked for effective, compassionate and patient-centered mental health care and education.

Western also is known for its pioneering research. It is committed to advancing medicine’s knowledge, understanding, and treatment of mental health. Western is an academic partner of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry. Their joint initiatives consistently rank first in National Institutes of Health psychiatric research funding.

Western began as Western State Psychiatric Hospital. It opened its doors to patients in 1942 and added outpatient programs a year later. From its beginning, the hospital provided training to medical interns and nursing students. In 1945, the hospital became known as Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and became part of the University of Pittsburgh in 1949.

Nearly 50 years later, its name changed in 2018 to UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital to recognize its primary focus on patient care as part of UPMC.

Mental Health Help When You Need It

When you need us — whether you're a child, adolescent, adult, or senior — we’re here to provide support and expert mental health care. Our services and programs are designed to meet your needs during each stage of your care and recovery.

We can help you in a variety of ways, depending on your mental health situation:

  • Because most problems do not need a hospital stay, we offer many outpatient services close to where you live or work.
  • If you need serious care, we offer acute inpatient services at UPMC Western and 8 other UPMC hospitals.
  • Virtual appointments let you access follow-up care. We offer telepsychiatry services and tele-behavioral health counseling programs.
  • Are you in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide? Western offers the only psychiatric emergency department in the Pittsburgh region. We also partner with crisis response organizations in many counties.
