UPMC Mercy Pavilion, home to the UPMC Vision Institute and the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, features artwork that connects patients and families, care providers, and community visitors.
The art is integral to the building, with most works commissioned for the site and designed to engage multiple senses. A wide range of art experiences appeals to the interests of diverse patients and visitors and is accessible to people of all abilities, including those with low vision.
An art committee of providers and staff engaged with artists over the first few months of their design development phase to share research, aspirations for the experiences people would have in building, and their experiences working with the patients who receive care at this world-class facility.
While each artwork is aesthetically distinct, conceptual threads connect the projects. Some of the artworks are grounded in community participation. Many are kinetic, and some change based on visitor interaction. Together, they create a welcoming, meaningful place.
