A specialized inpatient unit at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is available for adults experiencing acute behavioral and emotional problems, and who have autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and other developmental disorders.

The inpatient unit provides acute stabilization where adults receive active, short term treatment, specialized evaluation, and referral.

Diagnostic Assessment and Treatment

Assessment and treatment depends on the individual patient and may include:

  • Medication review and therapy.
  • Medical assessment and referrals.
  • Individual and group therapies.
  • Family meetings.
  • Functional behavior assessment.
  • Behavioral interventions.
  • Behavior training with family and caregivers.
  • Social skills training.
  • Adaptive and self-care skills training.
  • Disposition planning.
  • Vocational activities.

Caregivers and agency providers are involved throughout treatment. Opportunities for visitation are built into each person’s daily activities.

Staff

Many professionals in the fields of psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatry, and counseling are included on staff. Ongoing training also is provided to develop positive behavioral supports, positive approaches, and effective techniques to support the inpatient population.
