Clinical Informatics Fellowship Curriculum

Clinical Rotations

The planned curriculum will include clinical rotations in the following categories:

  • Ambulatory Informatics
      Includes Clinical Decision Support, Documentation, Orders, “Order sets”, data displays, billing and consumer facing systems (eg patient portal).
  • Inpatient Informatics
    • Includes corresponding topics in ambulatory rotation as well as those unique to an inpatient environment such as ED, OR, anesthesia, medication administration, imaging and trauma.
  • Pathology Informatics
  • Clinical Data Analytics
  • Inpatient Pediatrics
  • Center for Clinical Research Informatics
  • Population Health (UPMC HealthPlan)
  • Behavioral Health (elective)
  • Innovations and Commercial Ventures (UPMC Enterprises)
  • Implementation Team (new EMR)

Didactic Curriculum

The corner stone of the didactic curriculum is the Certificate program through the Department of Biomedical Informatics.

This will be supplemented by:

Fellows will be required to complete a Certificate Program. The Certificate program involves 15 course credits and should be easily integrated into the 2-year fellowship.

  • BIOINF 2070 Foundations of Biomedical Informatics 1 (3 credits)
  • BIOINF 2071 Foundations of Biomedical Informatics 2 (3 credits)
  • CS 1501 Algorithm Implementation (3 credits)

Certificate Program elective courses include:

The Department of Biomedical Informatics offers a Master’s Degree. Perspective fellows who may be interested should discuss the logistics with the Program Director.

Research

Fellowship faculty are involved in research in various facets of clinical informatics. Fellows will be involved in both operational and research projects throughout the entire fellowship. This will include short-term projects that can be completed with the clinical rotation periods as well as long-term projects that may span several clinical rotations. There will be dedicated block time to focus on theses projects.

Independent Clinical Practice

Fellows will have the opportunity to continue practice in their primary specialty for up to 20% of the fellowship time. Keeping up with changes in clinical workflows and experiencing electronic health record (EHR) issues firsthand is extremely valuable towards the goal of improving the EHR for both clinicians and patients.
