Research and Teaching at the UPMC Podiatry Residency Program

Research

Each year, residents are required to submit a research proposal or continue a prior research project coordinated in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board (IRB). During the first year, each resident must meet with an IRB staff member for research protocol orientation and then complete certification through the computerized tutorial. At the end of the third year, residents are expected to present a topic at the Annual Podiatry Conference. The conference is attended by podiatrists, allopathic physicians, and other health care professionals from the tri-state area and beyond. For more information about the conference, contact us.

Teaching

Each resident is expected to contribute to the educational experience of the podiatric externs. This may include clinical and surgical experiential teaching, participation in Journal Club and Radiology Rounds, mock interviews, and/or dissecting labs.

UPMC Podiatry residents will also be provided with laboratory experiences in a hands-on facility devoted to the advancement of surgical skills of residents and students. The lab area has multiple work stations equipped for use with cadaveric specimens and anatomical models. Residents are introduced to the latest surgical techniques by program attendings, guest lectures, and sales representatives. The lab includes standard operating equipment, internal hardware, external fixation, and arthroscopy sets.

Our program is only one of a handful in the nation to offer wet lab experiences for podiatry residents.
