Welcome to the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency based at UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. We are a 3-year program, approved through 2028 by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME).
Our program has a long history, moving to the University of Pittsburgh in 2000. Since, it has grown in size as well as reputation, becoming one of the most respected programs of its kind in the country. Our program is well integrated into the prestigious UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), with rotations and experiences at several University locations as well as many other local hospitals and offices.
Our purpose is to train the next generation of podiatric physicians and surgeons, and create future leaders and educators. We aim to educate physicians who are science-based, comprehensively skilled, and compassionate, well prepared to meet the challenges of our changing health care environment.
Our training goals are to provide the appropriate balance of office, hospital, and surgery to provide our graduates with a true understanding of life after school and residency. We strive to provide training that provides our graduates with the peace of mind and confidence to handle the most complex lower extremity pathology while being able to function without hesitation in a complicated, full scope health care environment. We look to provide a well-rounded experience giving our graduates confidence in their decision-making and hand skills, producing some of the finest foot and ankle specialists in the country.
Our strengths at the University of Pittsburgh, include a nurturing environment with unparalleled camaraderie between residents and staff. We promote a team atmosphere; working, learning, and teaching together. We provide an unmatched amount of educational activities including cadaver/saw bone workshop, lectures, radiology rounds, journal club, M&M conference, and others making the academic schedule rigorous but thorough. Faculty contribution and commitment is another strength of the program. Along with resident participation, faculty are always present and eager to ask questions and lead discussions. Research has been a strength of the program. We are a well published program with abundant research opportunities at one of the most respected medical educational institutions in the country. There is full commitment of the UPMC and the Graduate Medical Education department to our program. They have supported our growth over the years with our residents treated as equals, with identical health care benefits, salary, and opportunities.
The city of Pittsburgh itself has a celebrated past and a strong future. As the “city of bridges” with more than 400, it is a beautiful mingling of rivers and hills. It also boasts wonderful museums, like the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Science Center, the Andy Warhol Museum, the National Aviary, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, as well as many great public parks and trails. If you like architecture, there is plenty including the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of learning, the second tallest university building in the world and the tallest in the western hemisphere, as well as nearby Frank Llyod Wright icons Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Of course don’t forget the sports venues and food scene that have been a staple of Pittsburgh for decades. There is something for everyone.
