In 2022, the NCHL selected UPMC as one of seven national BOLD award winners that recognizes health care organizations that:
- Bases leadership-development practices on sound scientific principles and best available evidence for effectiveness.
- Promote leadership development as a critical focus.
- Identify, celebrate, and disseminate leadership development practices to benefit other health care organizations.
Best Places to Work for People with Disabilities
In 2024, UPMC achieved a score of 100 on the 2024 Disability Equality Index and was recognized as one of the “2024 Best Places to Work for People with Disabilities.” This was the first time that UPMC has been awarded this designation, and a score of 100 indicates adherence to many leading disability inclusion practices.
Catalyst Award
In 2023, UPMC received the Catalyst Award — the premier gender equity award that honors organizations:
- Who are advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
- Whose influential and pioneering initiatives accelerate and advance women and people of color into leadership roles.
Advanced Health Equity Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)
In 2022, UPMC for You earned NCQA’s:
- Health Equity Accreditation Plus for efforts to improve health equity and make equitable care a reality.
- Distinction in Multicultural Health Care. It recognizes market leaders working to provide culturally and linguistically sensitive services while also working to reduce health care disparities.
UPMC Community HealthChoices has earned:
- Accreditation from NCQA.
- The Long-Term Services and Supports distinction award, as well as a perfect audit score.
Healthiest Workplaces in America
In 2023, Healthiest Employers recognized UPMC because of the organizational culture and leadership commitment to workplace wellness and exceptional health and benefits offerings. Increased flexibility, work-life balance, and mental health resources have proven to be common trends among Healthiest Employers honorees.
UPMC also ranked first for healthiest employer with 5,000 or more employees in Western Pennsylvania and Philadelphia.
Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Heart Programs
In 2024, UPMC was listed as one of Becker’s “Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Heart Programs,” which celebrates institutions for their outstanding cardiovascular care, superior patient outcomes, and advanced technologies.
Military Friendly Employer
UPMC has been named both a nationwide top 10 Military Friendly Employer and a Military Spouse Friendly Employer for 2024 for its commitment to serving the military and veteran community — from hiring and career advancement to customer service and charitable investment.
UPMC is being honored for meeting or exceeding standards in critical areas of commitment to the military community including recruiting, hiring and training of veterans and military spouses, and partnering with and supporting veteran-owned businesses.
The Human Rights Campaign - Healthcare Equality Index (HEI)
HEI is the national benchmarking tool that measures equitable health for LGBTQ+ people. It evaluates health care facilities’ policies and practices around the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees.
In 2024, UPMC hospitals were recognized for their LGBTQ+ patient care policies and practices by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation – the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. Of these, eight hospitals were designated as “Leaders in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality” and another 25 received a “Top Performers” designation.
Inspiring Workplace Awards
In 2024, UPMC was named one of the “Top 100 Inspiring Workplaces in North America,” with a ranking inside the Top 50. Special recognition was received for the “Inclusion” category.
Inspiring Workplaces recognizes people-first organizations across the globe highlighting the key elements of culture and purpose, leadership, wellbeing, inclusion, communication, and experience.
Rally® Award
This is a global competition recognizing and celebrating excellence in recruitment marketing and employer branding practices.
Judges score nominees on four principal factors: innovation, quality, strategy, and results.
In 2022, UPMC won:

Stevie® Awards for Sales & Customer Service
UPMC Health Plan has earned 10 Stevie® Awards for 2024 – including a prestigious Grand Stevie Award – during the 18th Annual Stevie Awards for Sales and Customer Service. UPMC Health Plan also won five Gold Stevie Awards for:

- Best Use of Technology in Customer Service – Other Service Industries

The Vibrant Index Initiative
In 2024, UPMC received a top score of 95% across nine assessment areas for the Vibrant Pittsburgh index designation, which is given to companies that are working to improve the local area through leading diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
Since the Index began in 2019, UPMC has received the top designation as a Vibrant Champion for all five years.
UPMC Health Plan: #1 in Member Satisfaction Among Commercial Plans
For the fifth time, UPMC Health Plan has earned the prestigious recognition of being named #1 in member satisfaction among commercial health plans in Pennsylvania by J.D. Power.
UPMC Health Plan has the highest overall satisfaction score in Pennsylvania and leads all other PA carriers in the following seven dimensions:

UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute: Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Star Ratings
UPMC has been awarded the highest possible rating of three stars in four procedures across four different UPMC locations by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
- UPMC Hamot: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

World’s Most Ethical Companies
Ethisphere Institute focuses on defining and advancing ethical business practice standards.
In 2024, UPMC earned the World’s Most Ethical Companies award for the sixth year in a row and was the only organization recognized in the integrated health care systems category.

National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
Hillman is one of only 56 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States.
NCI recognizes this elite group for their demonstrated excellence in:
- Cancer research.
- Patient care.
- Education.
- Community outreach.
American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Practice Accreditation
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is one of the largest networks in the U.S. to hold ACRO Practice Accreditation. This assures that the center meets vigorous and nationally accepted standards for cancer patient safety and radiation oncology care.
Commission on Cancer (CoC) accredited with commendation
Multiple UPMC Hillman Cancer Center sites and UPMC hospitals received CoC recognition for:
- Meeting a national quality standard.
- Establishing a framework for quality.
- Improving patient care.
Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) certification
QOPI recognized UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for continuous quality improvement in medical oncology care.
Hillman is one of the largest cancer treatment networks in the U.S. to apply for and receive QOPI certification.
