Samantha H. of Gibsonia, Pa., was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 9 and later developed unexplained staring spells that were diagnosed as epilepsy in high school. Despite seizures, she completed school and worked. When medications failed, imaging revealed scar tissue causing medication resistant epilepsy. After monitoring and brain surgery at UPMC in 2021, she became seizure-free, regained her independence, and resumed a normal daily life.
