Spinal Cord Stimulation Restores Neural Function, Targets Key Feature of Progressive Neurodegenerative Disease

Dr. Marco Capogrosso, assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh; Dr. Robert Friedlander, chief of Neurosurgery at Pitt and co-director of the UPMC Neurological Institute; and Dr. Elvira Pirondini, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Pitt, wrote the study, published in Nature Medicine in February 2025.

Joseph Maroon, MD, Honored at Chuck Noll Foundation’s Inaugural Legends Unite Event

Dr. Joseph Maroon, Heindl Schol in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, along with Mark Lovell, PhD, founding director of the UPMC Sports Concussion Program, received the first Legends of Excellence Award from The Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research at the foundation’s inaugural Legends Unite event, held in November 2024. The award honors Drs. Maroon and Lovell for their groundbreaking contributions to concussion and brain injury research.

UPMC Part of First Clinical Trial in U.S. for Photodynamic Therapy to Treat Glioblastoma

Dr. Jan Drappatz and Dr. Costas Hadjipanayis review a case of a neuro-oncology patient at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and discuss Hillman as a site for the first clinical trial in the U.S. for photodynamic therapy to treat glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.

Pitt Study Provides Evidence That DBS May Be Used To Improve Strength in Patients With Brain Injuries

Dr. Jorge González-Martínez, UPMC Endowed Professor in Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Surgery, and Dr. Elvira Pirondini, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, wrote the study, which was published in Nature Communications in October 2024.

Dr. Robert Friedlander, chair of the UPMC Department of Neurosurgery and co-director of the UPMC Neurological Institute, authored a review article on Chiari malformation in The New England Journal of Medicine. The review, titled “Congenital and Acquired Chiari Syndrome” was published on June 19, 2024.
