A specialized inpatient unit at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is available for children and adolescents having acute behavioral and emotional problems, and who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, intellectual disabilities, and other developmental disorders.
The unit provides acute stabilization and specialized evaluation, treatment, and referral.

The family is involved with inpatient treatment. Opportunities for visits from family, friends, and agency providers are built into each child’s daily activity schedule.
Staff
The program staff includes a variety of professionals from psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatry, and counseling. Ongoing training is provided in positive behavioral supports, positive approaches, and effective techniques to support the needs of the pediatric inpatient population.
