Laurie Kocan

Laurie was born with spina bifida. She was home schooled and always knew she wanted to go to study art.

Leaving for college, Laurie attended rehab to prove that she could live on her own. She always strived for her independence, and she stayed in Pittsburgh after earning her degree in graphic design.

Laurie was asked to join the Spina Bifida Advisory Council to share her experience and to mentor people with spina bifida.

She created the group’s logo, using a snowflake image, because spina bifida is considered the snowflake disease: no two snowflakes are alike, nor are two people with spina bifida.
