Steven J. Collina, MD
Steven J. Collina, MD, is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He completed his training for both at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh. Prior to joining UPMC in central Pa., Dr. Collina was the assistant director and fellowship director at the Crozer Sports Medicine fellowship program in Suburban Philadelphia from 2001 through 2014. He was in a private practice orthopedic group before returning to academics with UPMC in central Pa. in 2018. He served as the team physician for the Philadelphia Union for six years as well as the medical director for the Philadelphia Triathlon for seven years. He has been performing diagnostic and guided procedures with ultrasound for over 10 years. Dr. Collina is a passionate mountain bike rider/racer with a special interest in biomechanics of cyclists.
Thomas C. Chu, DO
Thomas C. Chu, DO joined the UPMC Harrisburg Sports Medicine Fellowship as the Associate Program Director on July 1, 2023. Dr. Chu is board certified in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Tower Health-Reading Hospital in Reading, PA in 2018. He then went on to complete his Sports Medicine fellowship at Drexel University in 2019. During fellowship, he assisted in the care of athletes from the high school to the collegiate level, include Division 1 and 2 athletes.
Prior to joining UPMC in central PA in 2021, Dr. Chu worked as a sports medicine physician at Penn State-Holy Spirit from 2019-2021 in an orthopedic subspeciality practice after completion of his sports medicine fellowship. It was during this time that he expanded his sports medicine career to be able to deliver specialty care for athletes and non-athletes alike.
Dr. Chu assumed his current role as Assistant Program Director for the Sports Medicine Fellowship at UPMC-Harrisburg in 2021 alongside the current Program Director, Dr. Steven Collina.
His interests include concussion care, ultrasound-guided injections, and non-operative management of acute and chronic injuries. Dr. Chu also performs Iovera cryoneurolysis for non-operative management of knee pain from osteoarthritis.
Dr. Chu stays active with cycling (road cycling and Peloton) and weightlifting and enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and labradoodle. He is also a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers.
John V. Murphy, DO
John V. Murphy, DO, is board certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He completed his family medicine training at Penn State Health in Reading, Pa., and his sports medicine fellowship at UPMC in Pittsburgh. During training, he served as a team physician for the University of Pittsburgh football, Robert Morris Ice hockey, Robert Morris basketball, and various mass participation events including the Pittsburgh Marathon and EQT 10 miler. Dr. Murphy currently serves as the team physician for Millersville University. He has strong clinical interests in diagnostic ultrasound, regenerative orthobiologics, along with general musculoskeletal treatment of athletes of all ages. Dr. Murphy has always pursued an active lifestyle and participated in multiple sports through high school and college. He has a strong passion for sports and medicine, taking pride in treating patients of all activity levels. He specializes in the care of the entire athlete.
Michael Yurkewicz, DO
Michael Yurkewicz, DO, is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He attended Pennsylvania State University, The Behrend College, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology. He then received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at UPMC in central Pa. where during his 3rd year he was the chief resident. He then completed his sports medicine fellowship with Michael Cordas, DO, at UPMC in central Pa. He is the assistant director of the UPMC in central Pa. family medicine residency program as well as core faculty for the UPMC sports medicine fellowship. Dr. Yurkewicz is in private practice at Red Cedar Family Practice in Lewisberry, Pa., and he also sees patients at the Sports Medicine of Central PA-UPMC. He serves as the team physician for Cedar Cliff High school.
