Bringing a new life into the world is a miraculous journey. However, 1,900 babies every year need a little more medical attention after birth and are admitted to the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital supplies critically ill newborns with specialized, advanced neonatal medical treatment.

Calling the NICU

  • To reach the NICU from inside the hospital, dial 4420 from any in-house phone.
  • Please tell the health unit coordinator your name, your baby’s name and who you wish to speak with (doctor, nurses, social worker, etc.). These individuals may be busy with other patients, but the health unit coordinator will take your name and phone number and have the professional call you back as soon as possible.
  • If possible, please call ahead and let us know when you are planning to come visit your baby. The health unit coordinator will inform your infant’s care team that you are coming.

About the NICU

The NICU at UPMC Magee is equipped with a total of 83 beds, consisting of 48 private bays, and three open-bay pods (located within the NICU, on the 2700 unit, and on the 2800 unit). With private bays that utilize solid walls instead of glass or curtains, it is one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The privacy of these walls enhances UPMC Magee’s family centered care philosophy and allows for increased family interaction with baby, nurses, and support staff. With its own triage area, the NICU is able to stabilize newly admitted patients before being transferred into a private room.

Information for Clinicians

Referring physicians may obtain an immediate consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist, by calling 1-800-641-6667 24 hours a day.

This direct access to an MFM specialist can be particularly valuable when a decision is needed regarding local treatment versus transfer.

To ensure close communication, UPMC Magee’s MFM specialists contact the referring physician within 24 hours of delivery.

Subsequently, a clinical nurse specialist responsible for outreach coordination will provide written updates to keep referring physicians informed of the patient’s progress while in the hospital.

Any infant born at UPMC Magee whose primary care physician wishes to refer to the Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic for apnea or developmental concerns may call 412-641-4178.
