Pulmonary Care at UPMC Western Maryland

UPMC Western Maryland provides a wide variety of respiratory care services to both inpatients and outpatients throughout the tri-state area.

Our Services

Respiratory Care is available for your inpatient and outpatient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This service provides therapeutic and diagnostic modalities relating to the care of your conditions involving cardio-pulmonary disease processes. This includes oxygen therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, chest physiotherapy, mechanical ventilation, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gases, and non-invasive ventilation.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The pulmonary lab is available for your inpatient and outpatient testing by appointment. Diagnostic procedures include spirometry, spirometry before and after bronchodilation, lung volumes, DLCO, disability determination, arterial blood gases, pulmonary exercise, methacholine challenge, and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an outpatient program that meets twice weekly for 12 weeks and compliments medical therapy for individuals with chronic lung disease.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation will give you the tools, knowledge, and motivation you need to manage your chronic lung disease and will also teach exercise and lifestyle modification tailored to your individual needs.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is designed to help improve your ability to perform daily activities, increase strength and endurance, manage medications, enhance your outlook and emotional stability, give you more energy, improve your quality of life, and reduce your hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and primary care office visits.

Who may qualify

If you have any type of respiratory problems, you may qualify for the program. Conditions include but are not limited to:

  • COPD
  • Persistent asthma
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Restrictive lung disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Before and after lung surgery
  • Occupational lung disorder
  • Long COVID

  • Exercise/activity directed and supervised by a physician
  • Training to make activities of daily life easier
  • Breathing retraining
  • Energy conservation methods
  • Stress management and coping techniques
  • Nutrition awareness and medication education

How to enroll

To enroll, call our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program or talk to your physician. This program is often covered by insurance, but we will be happy to check with your carrier to see if you qualify for coverage. A referral by a physician is required for entry into the program, however, patients can self-refer and we can check with your physician to see if you qualify for the program.
