​Eligibility and Curriculum for the Neurology Residency Program

Residents are selected on the basis of academic performance, interviews and recommendations.

Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for an ACGME accredited program:

  • Graduated from a medical school in the US or Canada accredited by the LCME
  • Graduated from a college of osteopathic medicine in the US accredited by the AOA
  • Graduated from a medical school outside the US or Canada and either holds a valid ECFMG certificate prior to appointment or holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the US licensing jurisdiction in which the ACGME-accredited program is located

Listed below is the curriculum for the UPMC Hamot Neurology Residency Program:

Year One

3 months internal medicine
3 months neurology
1 month internal medicine elective
1 month emergency medicine
1 month cardiology
1 month ICU
1 month renal
2 weeks neurosurgery
2 weeks ophthalmology

Year Two

9 months inpatient neurology
1 month neuroradiology
1 month EEG
1 month elective

Year Three

5 months inpatient neurology 3 months EMG
2 months EEG
1 month elective
2 weeks neuropathology
2 weeks research

Year Four

3 months inpatient neurology
3 months neuropediatrics – UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
2 months outpatient selective
1 month elective
1 month multiple sclerosis
1 month psychiatry
