Welcome to the UPMC Hamot Emergency Medicine Residency
A message from the program director, Justin Puller, MD, FACEP.
The UPMC Hamot Emergency Medicine Residency is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program offering a well-rounded training experience at a fully accredited Level II trauma, chest pain and comprehensive stroke center. It is housed in a 458-bed tertiary care hospital. The Emergency Department is a state-of-the-art 36-room facility serving approximately 80,000 patients annually.
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program provides progressive learning experiences that prepare residents to:
- Work in any clinical emergency medicine environment, including academic or community practice, EMS, and administration.
- Meet certification requirements of the American Board of Emergency Medicine
- Manage medical/surgical problems presented in an emergency department setting, based on the knowledge of basic and clinical sciences.
- Utilize bedside ultrasound for real-time clinical decision making.
- Use critical thinking in making effective decisions for patient management.
- Rapidly and accurately evaluate, organize, and initiate treatment of the emergency patient.
- Make sound, ethical, and legal judgments as to the expected risks arising from therapy as well as the condition being treated.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required of a competent emergency physician.
Program signaling
For the 2024 – 2025 application cycle, our program will participate in Program Signaling as follows:
- During application review, signaled applications will be reviewed first.
- A signaled application would be favored over a non-signaled application as a tiebreaker for an interview offer between two applicants who are otherwise closely qualified.
- We still plan to offer interviews to individuals who do not signal our program.
- Program signaling will not affect rank list.
We will be participating in the universal interview release date of October 16, 2024, with initial interview offers being sent. Following the unified release date, we will continue to release interview invitations on a rolling basis.
Aims
Our program trains resident physicians in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. The primary focus of our program is to train physicians to practice emergency medicine with competence in any combination of academic, community, urban and rural settings. Our goal is to train physicians to practice with compassion, respect and a focus on service to patients, co-workers and the communities in which they live. We aim to provide a supportive working and learning environment and to allow residents to explore specific interests including emergency medical services, international health, and administration so that they may realize future career goals as emergency physicians.
