The UPMC Altoona Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center offers a Stroke Support Group for individuals affected by stroke. Our support group is not just for individuals who have had a stroke, but for their family members and caregivers as well.
A stroke can be a life-altering event, affecting a person's job, family, and many other aspects of life. Recovery often depends on how much support a person has, including social support. Our patients come together to exchange information and encouragement, learn about strokes and stroke prevention, and help other stroke survivors learn to be as independent as possible.
While every stroke is different, learning about others' experiences can empower survivors in their own recovery. Family members and caregivers also benefit from hearing survivors talk about how their family helped them, including how they could have helped differently to better support them.
