UPMC Altoona's Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center is home to an expert team of doctors, nurses, and staff. A vascular neurologist — a doctor who treats blood vessel diseases in the brain and spinal cord — leads the team.

We use the gold standard tests and guidelines to quickly and correctly diagnose and treat strokes.

Rapid Response Stroke Team

In Blair County, EMS (emergency medical service) workers are a key part of our team. They're ready to respond to a stroke 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our EMS rapid response stroke team members at UPMC Altoona:

• Treat strokes with the same urgency as heart attacks.
• Prioritize 911 calls for stroke victims.
• Have special training to detect stroke symptoms.
• Call ahead to let us know a possible stroke victim is on the way.
