NCI – Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is our country’s leading authority on cancer. NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers are an elite group of cancer centers that demonstrate excellence in cancer research, patient care, education, and community outreach.
There are only 57 NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country.
For patients, receiving treatment at an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center can mean better outcomes. A 2015 study of individuals with newly diagnosed, adult-onset cancer showed that patients who received treatment from a Comprehensive Cancer Center had better outcomes than those treated at cancer centers without this designation.
Here at UPMC Hillman, we offer the latest advances in clinical care, backed by evidence-based research. We remain committed to reducing the burden of cancer in the communities that we serve.

Radiation Oncology in Central Pa.
Radiation oncology, also called radiation therapy, uses x-rays or other high-energy types of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center uses the latest radiation oncology techniques and technologies as part of our complete treatment approach.
Our skilled radiation oncologists use a range of specialized devices and techniques to deliver radiation therapy.
Low-Dose Radiotherapy (LDRT), has a strong anti-inflammatory effect and is an established, standard treatment for inflammatory disorders such as osteoarthritis. The radiation doses used are much lower than those used for treating cancer and treatment can typically be completed in six to eight office visits.
Also effective in treating:
- Medial and lateral epicondylitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tendinopathies
- Trochanteric bursitis
We're the largest system accredited by the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). This means you'll receive safe, high-quality radiation oncology care at each visit.
Cylinder HDR Brachytherapy Implant for the Cervix or Endometrium
For many women with uterine cancer, radiation treatment is used to reduce the risk after tumor recurrence following surgical removal of the uterus. This is commonly done with a brachytherapy procedure called a vaginal cylinder, wherein a device is inserted to the vagina to deliver radiation directly to the at-risk area. It has greatly reduced side effects, as radiation is delivered inside-out, rather outside-in (external beam). Cylinder High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy is currently offered in Central Pa.
