New Patient Info

UPMC Hanover offers a 12-bed infusion center with comfortable reclining chairs or beds for your comfort. Our experienced nurses are focused on providing your care within our center. Our infusion center also offers warm blankets, pillows, personal televisions with cable TV and wireless connection for those individuals who wish to bring wireless devices. Beverages and snacks are provided at no cost.

The Outpatient Infusion Center is able to provide services to people requiring intravenous infusions, blood and platelet infusions, injections, chemotherapy, central line dressing changes and central line lab collections and PICC line insertions.

We will perform a basic physical assessment, and your doctor or the hospitalist attending to you will discuss the possible side effects of your infusion. We cannot begin to prepare your infusion until after the nurse has assessed you. While we are carefully preparing your infusions you may relax, read, watch TV, use our internet or enjoy a light snack. One of the IV nurses will then start your IV, which will deliver your medication or blood transfusion. For your comfort, a friend or family member may stay with you during your entire transfusion.

Some approximate time frames

  • Blood transfusions usually last about five to six hours
  • Remicade is usually two hours or more
  • Depending on the type and dose of the medication you are taking, your infusion may last one to eight hours

While visiting our Outpatient Infusion Center here are a few things to consider

  • One family member or friend is welcome to stay with you during your appointment, or we can provide an approximate time of completion for their return.
  • Children are not allowed in the Outpatient Infusion Center, and child care is not available.
  • A physician order is required for all appointments in the Outpatient Infusion Center. Outpatient procedures are scheduled by physicians or physician offices by calling the Outpatient Infusion Center.
