Dr. Darshit Thakrar, formerly a radiologist with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, shared his experience with outpatient Limb Loss Therapy at UPMC.
He recently achieved his goal of running a 5K, 5 years after an accident left him with an above the knee amputation.
“I have really benefited from this community program, and I wouldn't have been able to do this without the support from Lisa and her program. I feel this program certainly played a huge role as far as getting active is concerned.” He was able to celebrate this milestone running alongside his clinical team, Peter Leimkuehler, CPO of Union Orthotics and Prosthetics, and Lisa Franz, PT, Limb Loss Program Director for UPMC Rehabilitation Institute.
Dr. Thakrar completed his initial prosthetic training at the inpatient rehab unit at UPMC Montefiore. He then initiated his outpatient care at the South Side location for advanced prosthetic training and pre-running skills and then transitioned to the Chapel Harbor location for intermittent visits to monitor progress with strength training and conditioning.
