Neurosurgeons at UPMC are pioneers in their field, developing new techniques and tools for endovascular and neurovascular surgery, also known as cerebrovascular surgery.

We focus on sophisticated treatments and procedures that enhance our ability to minimize damage and maximize the benefits of surgery.

Endovascular Treatments

We offer several types of endovascular treatments for aneurysms, blocked arteries, AVMs, tumors, and stroke:

• Aneurysm coiling — This minimally invasive treatment involves inserting a coiling device, via catheter, to stop or prevent a brain aneurysm from bleeding.
• Carotid angioplasty and stenting — A type of endovascular surgical procedure that uses a microcatheter to reopen blockage of the carotid artery in the neck to help reduce the risk of stroke.
• Embolization for AVMs (arteriovenous malformations) and tumors — This non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure uses a catheter to guide coils or balloons through the arteries to block blood flow to the AVM.
• Percutaneous transluminal arterial angioplasty (PTA) and stenting — A type of endovascular surgery for reopening dangerous blockages in the intracranial arteries located between the brain and its middle membrane.
• Stroke intervention — UPMC offers advanced or investigational stroke therapies that are not widely available.
