UPMC Content 3

The Magee-Womens Breast Care Program in Pittsburgh is a nationally ranked program offering advanced surgical procedures for diagnosing and treating people with breast cancer.

Our experienced breast surgeons offer a number of minimally invasive surgical techniques to test for and remove cancerous (malignant) and noncancerous (benign) breast tumors, including:

  • Needle localization: Also known as fine wire localization, this breast biopsy technique is for masses too small to be felt by touch.
  • Radioactive seed localization: A procedure that combines advanced imaging with precise tumor localization to remove breast tumors, while helping to spare healthy tissue.
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy: A minimally invasive procedure to remove the main (sentinel) lymph nodes in the underarm (axilla) to test for cancer.
  • Axillary lymph node dissection: Surgery to remove all or a group of lymph nodes in the underarm (axilla), if your sentinel lymph node biopsy is positive for cancer.

Highly specialized technologies and cutting-edge research, coupled with individualized treatments, provide you the highest level of breast cancer care.
