Family Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Lititz

Thank you for considering the graduate medical education programs at UPMC Lititz.

Our institution is committed to providing a quality education for medical students and residents. With the unified accreditation process in place, our three residency programs have received continued accreditation with osteopathic recognition from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

UPMC Lititz is a small, community hospital with the resources of a large academic center. The focus of graduate medical education at UPMC Lititz is to prepare physicians for independent practice in a medical specialty. The development of professional skills, improvement of clinical competencies, and acquisition of detailed factual knowledge in a specialty are all goals for quality graduate medical education. This process is intended to prepare the physician for the independent practice of medicine and to develop a commitment to lifelong learning, a process critical for maintaining professional growth and competency.

The residency programs have several pieces of simulation equipment for competency training. The administration and GME department believe that the best medical education occurs in safe, high-quality care settings. Inter-professional training within the institution promotes quality patient outcomes and high levels of patient satisfaction.

The staff and administration of UPMC Lititz value the residents and believe that medical education is a vital part of the institution. We seek residents that are dedicated to learning and functioning in a quality program that prepares the physician to serve patients and practice superior medical care.

Director's Welcome

Image of Dr. Scheid.Greetings from the UPMC Lititz Family Medicine Residency Program! UPMC Lititz is a community hospital with all the resources of the larger UPMC academic institution. Our UPMC Lititz faculty are dedicated to teaching, and our local organization has taught residents and medical students for the past 75 years. Historically, we were the regional osteopathic medical facility, and we have preserved that heritage by incorporating Osteopathic Recognition accreditation into our Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Programs.

The Family Medicine Residency Program cares for a diverse population in nearby Lancaster City, while also incorporating many resident opportunities for suburban and rural patient care. Our family medicine residency clinical office provides primary care services, women’s health services, prenatal care, pediatric care, Medication Assisted Treatment, hepatitis C treatment, and occupational health services.  Our residency program focuses on training well-prepared ambulatory family medicine physicians but also provides the resources and opportunities for residents to explore their individual passions. Graduates of our UPMC Lititz Family Medicine Residency Program have pursued outpatient family medicine, urgent care/occupational medicine, hospital medicine, wound care, palliative medicine, and addiction medicine.

I joined the UPMC Lititz Family Medicine Residency Program in 2018 when moving back to my hometown, Lititz, Pennsylvania. Since that time our Residency Program has obtained continued accreditation from the ACGME, continued accreditation for Osteopathic Recognition, and grown to our current complement size of 12 residents. As a UPMC Family Medicine Residency graduate myself, I can attest to the vast resources available for our Graduate Medical Education programs. Dr. Voelckers, our Assistant Program Director, joined our Program in 2020.

As a native of Lititz, I can proclaim the benefits of living and working in a community that still has a “small town” personality. The Lititz region is a mecca for locally grown, fresh produce. We are surrounded by many cultural, musical, and artistic offerings. Additionally, our location provides ample opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, and various outdoor activities. Furthermore, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City are all accessible as daytrip destinations. Many of our graduates have remained local due to the fair cost of living and lifestyle offerings of our Lititz region.

My goal is to recruit and train a diverse group of family medicine physicians and ensure program graduates have the skill set needed to succeed in a modern physician career.

Thank you for considering our UPMC Lititz Family Medicine Residency Program!

Sincerely,
Christopher R. Scheid, DO, MBA, CPE, FAAFP
