Family Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Lititz: Overview

Mission Statement

The mission of the Family Medicine Residency training program at UPMC Lititz is to prepare Family Medicine physicians to provide outstanding, community-focused patient care for a diverse population. This directly aligns with the larger mission of UPMC Lititz as a charitable organization, dedicated to maintaining and improving the health and quality of life for all people in Central Pennsylvania. The program promotes progressive development of competence in the practice of Family Medicine and Osteopathic principles.

Program Aims

During the three years of residency training, residents develop a broad knowledge base that includes training in Pediatrics, Internal medicine, Emergency Medicine, Women's Health, Behavioral Health, Osteopathic principles, and Addiction Medicine. Resident physicians are prepared to care for patients of all ages. Our urban continuity clinic location provides patient diversity: age, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, race, and socioeconomics. The medical needs of the resident's patient panel is varied, complex, and challenging. In addition to providing direct medical care, the Family Medicine resident is an integral part of the patient care team, advocating for the patient and helping overcome obstacles to effective medical care.

Training at UPMC Lititz is about opportunities. Residents have the opportunity to discover their passion and to develop the practice style and focus that will enable them to find satisfaction in their work and commitment to their patients. This process is intended to prepare Family Medicine physicians for the independent practice of medicine and to develop a commitment to lifelong learning, a process critical for maintaining professional growth and competency.

With the UPMC Lititz Family Medicine a residency program, you will receive a thorough in-patient education focused on becoming a strong family physician ready to contribute to any type of community. The objective is to prepare family medicine physicians academically, clinically, and socially for the challenging and changing environment of out-patient medicine. Faculty are approachable and knowledgeable. Rotations with board-certified specialists in all fields, along with a wide variety in our clinic population, provide the necessary skills to become successful as a physician, whether in an urban or rural setting.

Didactics

• Along with the daily morning report lectures, Family Medicine has weekly didactic time dedicated to the specialty.
• OMM Teaching Sessions
• Lunch and Learn lectures for the Nursing Staff

Osteopathic Recognition Eligibility for Allopathic Students

• A minimum of 60 hours AOA category 1A or 1B, osteopathic training containing all of the following:
• osteopathic philosophy, history, terminology, and code of ethics
• anatomy and physiology related to osteopathic medicine
• indications, contraindications, and safety issues associated with the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT)
• palpatory diagnosis, osteopathic structural examination, and OMT
• A letter of recommendation from an osteopathic physician with whom you’ve worked/trained specifically detailing why candidate is recommended for an FM residency with Osteopathic Recognition
• Osteopathic Personal Statement- 1 page or less, in addition to FM statement
• Commitment to additional osteopathic principles and practice training during residency, including a mandatory 4-week elective that focuses on OMT.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed through December 1st. If selected to interview with our program, you will receive an invitation via ERAS.

The UPMC Lititz Family Medicine residency program does not support visas at this time.
