Before Your Stay at UPMC Jameson

Preoperative History and Physical/Preoperative Medical Evaluation

• Preoperative history and physicals need to be completed within 30 days before the scheduled date of surgery. Please schedule an appointment with your primary care provider (PCP).
• Complete your preoperative testing. Your doctor may need to review the results of your preoperative tests. If possible, you should have your testing done before your PCP visit.
• If you are unable to see your PCP before your surgery, please let your surgeon know. The UPMC Jameson Outpatient Center may be able to provide this service, but you will need a prescription from your doctor.

Testing

You need to have all testing completed immediately after you schedule your surgery. If your surgeon requests tests such as blood work, an EKG, or a chest x-ray, UPMC Jameson has walk-in testing at its Outpatient Center for your use.

UPMC Jameson Outpatient Center Walk-in Hours:

• Lab: 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• X-ray: 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• EKG: 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What to bring to your preadmission visit

• Your medical and surgical history.
• A list of all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins and herbal preparations.
• A list of all allergies.
• The names and phone numbers of your current PCP and other medical specialists involved in your health care.

Important Information

• Please only take the medicines instructed by your doctor and preadmission nurse. Some medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements should be stopped before surgery. Please check with your surgeon or PCP before surgery.
• Let your surgeon’s office know if you have any symptoms of a cold, fever, or infection, or if you have any changes in the level of your pain, numbness, or sensitivity.
• If instructed, remember to bring your x-ray/CT/MRI films or CDs the day of your surgery.
• If you are having any type of sedation or anesthesia, you cannot drive a car and must have a responsible adult take you home. If you are taking public transportation (ex: bus), you must have a responsible adult accompany you. You must have someone stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery.

You will get a phone call from a UPMC Jameson preadmission nurse one to two days before your surgery. For this call, please have the following available:

• A list of all your medicines, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal preparations
• A list of allergies, including medicines, food, or latex
• Your medical history and past surgery experiences
• The name and phone number of your PCP
• The name and phone number of your pharmacy
• Any special needs (translators, accommodations, etc.).

Please review the following guidelines for your day of surgery:

• Bring an updated list of medicines with you.
• Bring your health insurance card and photo ID.
• Leave all valuables at home.
• Wear comfortable clothing that is loose fitting and easy to take off.
• Do not use any lotions, perfumes, deodorant, makeup, powder, hair products, or aftershave.
• Do not wear jewelry, including rings. Take off all body piercings. If you have a skin piercing, please ask your surgeon if removal is necessary before your surgery date.
• Do not wear contact lenses. Bring your glasses and a case.
• If you use a constant positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine at home, you will need to bring it the day of your surgery.
• Bring any inhalers from home; all other prescriptions will be provided by the hospital pharmacy.
• Free parking is available in the outpatient parking lot off Garfield Avenue. Enter the hospital through our outpatient entrance. Follow the signs and take the elevator to the second floor.
• Visitation is limited to one to two adult family members or friends on the day of surgery.

Before your visit or stay, we urge you to contact your health plan to confirm:

• The extent of your insurance coverage.
• That UPMC Jameson accepts your insurance.

UPMC Jameson offers financial help for people who are uninsured and underinsured. Income guidelines determine the amount that a person can receive in charity care. If your income exceeds the maximum requirements to have your bill written off in part or in full, we offer flexible payment plans and discounts.
