Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
At UPMC, our experts use innovative technologies — like robotic bronchoscopy — in the battle against lung cancer.
What Is Robotic Bronchoscopy?
The robotic bronchoscopy system allows us to detect and treat lung cancer earlier, which is a crucial first step in saving lives.
If you're at risk for lung cancer or have started to show symptoms, your doctor may order a CT scan. If they see an abnormal spot or nodule on your lungs, doctors will do a lung biopsy.
Robotic bronchoscopy allows experts to access the nodule even if it's deep in the lung and hard to reach.
How Does Robotic Bronchoscopy Work?
Your doctor will first decide the best pathway to the nodule. Then, they'll use a hand-held controller to guide the robot's arms to that part of the lung.
The robot holds the bronchoscope — a flexible tube with a light and camera — so the care team can view the process.
Once doctors reach the nodule, they'll insert various biopsy tools through the bronchoscope and take a tissue sample for testing.
Why Robotic Bronchoscopy?
- It allows for easier, safer, and smoother navigation to the nodule in the lung.
- The robot's arms can make small, precise movements that can be hard to do with standard methods.
- Advanced camera technology gives your care team a real-time look at pictures of your lungs.
