Did you know you don't always have to travel to Pittsburgh for specialty health care?
UPMC Outpatient Telemedicine Centers bring our experts to you through state-of-the-art videoconference technology.
How Do Telemedicine Centers Work?
UPMC Outpatient Telemedicine Centers:
- Connect people and health care providers in small or rural hospitals and outpatient locations to UPMC specialists virtually.
- Aid in the diagnosis and care of urgent conditions, as well as support complex and chronic cases.
- Use HIPAA-secure equipment in a patient exam room with a staff member who oversees live video outpatient visits.
- Provide you with access to expert specialty care, sparing you the time and expense of long-distance travel.
What Can I Expect During My Appointment?
Your appointment will start like an in-person doctor's office visit.
When you arrive, you'll check in and then your nurse will:
- Take you to the exam room.
- Check your blood pressure and weight.
- Ask questions about your health, any concerns, and what medications you're taking.
Here's how receiving care virtually will differ.
Rather than coming into the room to see you, the doctor will appear on a large screen via a secure video call. The nurse will set this up, so you don't have to worry about any connection issues.
You and your doctor can see and hear each other, just as you would if they were in the room. Your doctor may ask the nurse to use tools that send real-time info, such as a Bluetooth stethoscope.
- When the visit is over, you'll receive a printout of your doctor's instructions and next steps. For instance, it could have info about a change in your prescriptions or where to go for testing.
