UPMC Presbyterian Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at UPMC Presbyterian provides the best possible 24/7 emergency care throughout the Pittsburgh region — no matter what time of day, or how complex the illness or injury.

Our 44-bed Emergency Department offers:

  • Advanced approaches to treating nearly any health issue — from heart attacks and strokes to infections, injuries, and minor illnesses.
  • Laboratory and imaging services that allow us to diagnose and treat these conditions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • A patient- and family-centered approach, aimed at keeping family members comfortable and in close communication with doctors and other emergency staff.

COVID-19 Tests

If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 and have only mild symptoms – and you do not have difficulty breathing – you can schedule a COVID-19 test at a designated test location. The Emergency Department is NOT the place to get a COVID-19 test UNLESS you are experiencing breathing problems or other severe symptoms.

Going to an Emergency Department with mild or no symptoms may create a long wait time for you to be seen and COVID-19 test results do not come back more quickly – they still will take one, two, or more days.

Get more information or find a testing location near you.

For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For immediate help with a mental health crisis, call 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Advanced Stroke Care

As part of the UPMC Stroke Institute, the UPMC Presbyterian Emergency Department is certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Our multidisciplinary team of emergency medicine and stroke experts:

  • Uses advanced treatments to help prevent disabilities and restore physical and cognitive functions.
  • Sees more than 1,500 stroke patients each year.
  • Provides consultations for hundreds of others through the UPMC Stroke Telemedicine Program.
