​UPMC Northwest Radiologic Technology Program

The UPMC Northwest Radiologic Technology Program, established over 55 years ago, is dedicated to preparing and educating radiographers for rewarding careers. Our graduates are equipped to join the workforce as leaders and proponents of exceptional patient care. The program offers a comprehensive, 23-month certificate course. The UPMC Northwest Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by the JRCERT, with the program's most recent award being an eight-year accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The mission of the UPMC Northwest Radiologic Technology Program is to graduate competent Radiologic Technologists who will deliver quality and compassionate health care with dignity and respect.

    • Students will be clinically competent in entry-level radiographic skills. Outcomes include:

  • Quality Point Average: 4.0; Letter Grade: A; Percentage Equivalent: 96% and above
  • Quality Point Average: 3.5; Letter Grade: A-; Percentage Equivalent: 92% - 95%
  • Quality Point Average: 3.0; Letter Grade: B; Percentage Equivalent: 88% - 91%
  • Quality Point Average: 2.5; Letter Grade: B-; Percentage Equivalent: 83% - 87%
  • Quality Point Average: 2.0; Letter Grade: C; Percentage Equivalent: 79% - 82%
  • Quality Point Average: 1.5; Letter Grade: C-; Percentage Equivalent: 75% - 78%

The Radiologic Technology Program is a 23-month program. 

Weekly Schedule: 36 to 40 hours

Location: UPMC Northwest, Seneca Place building, Seneca, Pa.

Classroom instruction is held two days a week at UPMC Northwest Seneca Place. Clinical instruction is provided at either UPMC Northwest in Seneca, Pa., Grove City Medical Center in Grove City, Pa., Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Associates UPMC in Franklin, Pa, and UPMC Hamot in Erie Pa.

There are two weeks’ vacation which includes Christmas and New Year’s Day each year of training.

At the end of the first year, students are given a week off which includes July 4th.

Students receive the week that incudes Memorial Day of their senior year.

Students are given a bank of 50 hours that can be used as necessary.

Please read the admission policy found in the hyperlink below. Admission requirements include the following.

  • Age 18 or older by July 31 of the starting year.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A sophomore or equivalent in the Medical Imaging Sciences Program at Clarion University must possess at least an associate degree and fulfill the program prerequisites. Documentation of the degree is required.
  • 2.5 GPA upon application is required.
  • Completed application form and non-refundable fee by January 31.

Note: Final admission is contingent on a health physical, drug screening, and security clearance.

Tuition is currently set at $5,000 a year.

Fees include:

  • A non-refundable application fee of $50
  • Textbooks for the entire two-year program are estimated at $1,100
  • Uniforms/shoes for the entire two-year program are estimated at $300
  • Registry Review program - costs approximately $150 for the entire length of the program.
  • Criminal History and Child Abuse Clearance; cost estimated at $40 to $50
  • Clinical Computer Program (Trajecsys) $150 for the entire course of the program
  • Liability Insurance is approximately $60-70 for the program length.

Note: Tuition and costs are subject to change.

Refund Policy

A refund of 50 percent of paid tuition for the current year will be made if the student withdraws during the first three months of the current year.

No amount of paid tuition will be refunded following the end of the third month from the date of entry into the program.

Graduation Requirements

A certificate of graduation is obtained after a student has completed the following.

  1. Successfully completed all didactic classes with a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
  2. Successfully completed clinical education with a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
  3. Accomplished the program’s goals and objectives.
  4. Completed all the mandatory and elective competencies on exams specified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists®.
  5. Paid all fees owed for the program.
  6. Completed all time required by the program, including all make-up time.
  7. Attended a Review Course for the National Registry.
  8. Student and staff will have completed the Terminal Competency Form.
  9. A grade of 75% or better on the simulated registries given during the months of February through June.

Bachelor degree option

PennWest University students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Sciences (BSMIS) have an academic preparation of two years at the university and continue with the 23-month course of study at UPMC Northwest Radiologic Technology Program.

Certificate option

Applicants must possess at least an Associate Degree and fulfill the program prerequisites. Documentation of the degree is required.
