Total Joint Replacement Same-Day Discharge Program

At the Magee Bone and Joint Center, your health, safety, and comfort are our number one concerns throughout the joint replacement process. And when it comes to comfort, we know there's no place like home.

Research shows that people who spend less time in the hospital after surgery have better results than those with longer post-op stays. They also recover faster.

The sooner we get you back home, the sooner you can get back to your normal routine.

For some, this might mean spending a night in the hospital after having joint replacement surgery.

But new advancements in pain management and less invasive surgical techniques mean that some people can go home just hours after surgery.

Our experts will work with you to decide the right pathway. And we're with you throughout the entire process, from your first consult all the way through rehab and follow-up care.

Regardless of your pathway, we want to get you home and back to your life as quickly and safely as possible.

Is the Total Joint Replacement Same-Day Discharge Program Right for Me?

Most of our total joint replacement patients are safe to go home in one or two nights.

Our team works to find hip and knee replacement patients that meet the criteria for same-day discharge. They have joint replacement surgery, and within a few hours are already in the rehab stage and ready to go home.

What are the pros of same-day discharge?

  • Being in a familiar setting with all the comforts of home.
  • Sleeping in your own bed.
  • Eating your own food.
  • A lower risk of infection.

Can I take part in the same-day discharge program?

Same-day discharge after total joint replacement surgery might be right for you if you:

  • Have a healthy and active lifestyle with no major health issues, like heart or lung disease or diabetes.
  • Are under the age of 75.
  • Have a BMI under 35.
  • Have someone who can be with you for at least 24-72 hours after surgery.

Same-day discharge isn't right for everyone, and that's okay.

No matter what path you take, you'll receive the same expert care that has made our program a recognized Center of Excellence.
