Core Cardiopulmonary Course
Our Core Cardiopulmonary course is a 24- to 32-hour program for professional staff who care for high-acuity medical-surgical or critical care patients.
Topics covered during the program’s two 8-hour assessment days include:
- Cardiac care
- Pulmonary care
- Chest tube care
- Neurological care
- Gastrointestinal care
- Renal care
- Psycho-emotional care
- Pain assessment
- Interpretation of laboratory findings
- Emergent airway management
The two-day class may be followed by a clinical day scheduled in your home unit. During your clinical day, you will receive support from a staff development instructor, a clinical nurse specialist or a Learning Institute staff member while you perform in-depth patient assessments to reinforce class content.
The program also offers an additional one or two days of content with one day focused on cardiac care, and the other focused on pulmonary care.
Content provided during the cardio day includes:
- Coronary syndromes
- Interventional cardiology
- Care of OHS patients
- Care of patients with pacers and ICDs
- Peripheral vascular disease
Content covered during the pulmonary day includes:
- BIPAP
- CPAP
- Modes of ventilation
- Care of patients on ventilators
- Airways
- Suctioning
- Hands-on ventilator experience
NOTE: Experienced nurses may be exempt from the course if they can pass an examination.
Intermediate Dysrhythmia Course
UPMC in central Pa.'s Intermediate Dysrhythmia program is a four-day course (32 hours) with content including:
- Full cardiac rhythm analysis
- Cardiovascular medications
- Pacemakers
- 12-lead EKG interpretation for ischemia, injury and infarction
NOTE: Experienced nurses may be exempt from the course if they can pass an examination.
