Diabetic Wound Care
One of the most common complications associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes is delayed wound healing. If left untreated, wounds can lead to infection, amputation, and even death. Diabetes is a leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation in the United States. So no matter how small or superficial a wound is, you should not ignore it if you have diabetes. Knowing how to treat minor wounds will help you avoid infection and speed healing. As part of our multidisciplinary care team, our board-certified podiatrists and surgeons specialize in wound care treatment of the lower legs and feet.
A diabetic patient with a non-healing wound of the lower extremity can now undergo hyperbaric treatments if they meet the following three criteria:
- Patient has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and has a lower extremity wound due to the diabetes
- The patient's wound is classified as Wagner grade III or higher
- The patient has failed an adequate course of standard wound therapy
Wound Care Education
Our staff goes beyond treating your wound by helping you address underlying conditions that contribute to your wound problems. We will educate you on lifestyle or health modifications that will help prevent wounds and promote healing. We will also make sure you have a full understanding of how to take the best possible care of your wound at home. You will receive instructions, at each visit, on specifically how to care for your wound at each stage of the healing process.
Wound Care Technology
As part of our commitment to providing the best treatment using the latest technology, we use state-of-the-art equipment, including:
- Electronic medical record storage and transmission. Our staff will send a customized report, complete with pictures of your wound, to your referring physician.
- Transcutaneous oxygen monitor. Measures oxygen circulation and monitors your wound’s potential for healing. This device helps our doctors decide if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is right for you.
- Arobella Qoustic Wound Therapy System™. Uses ultrasonic technology to remove tissue while reducing pain and bacteria on the wound surface. This device provides an alternative to removing tissue using a scalpel or other sharp instrument.
