Palliative care is a special type of care that focuses on relieving pain and other symptoms of a serious illness like breast cancer. It is not the same as hospice, which focuses on providing care for people who are terminally ill.
UPMC's palliative care team is made up of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and other professionals. This team works together to help improve quality of life for patients and their families in many ways. In addition to helping with pain and symptom management, the palliative care team can help with difficult medical decisions and stress management. It can also provide an extra layer of support when life gets distressing.
Palliative care is appropriate at any point in a person’s illness and treatment. It can even be used when the patient is expected to make a full recovery from their breast cancer.
Speak with your UPMC Breast Care Center team if you would like to learn about your palliative care options.
