For some people who have struggled with sustainable weight loss, bariatric surgery at UPMC may be the answer.
A comprehensive screening process is in place to ensure patients are physically and emotionally prepared for the procedure and the lifestyle changes that accompany it.
A candidate for bariatric surgery must:

- Check with your insurance for bariatric coverage.
- Have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 OR have a BMI of 35 or higher plus medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.
- Complete a comprehensive evaluation (with a variety of health care professionals), including:
- Medically managed weight loss program
- Nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian
- Physical and health history
- Psychological screening done by PinnacleHealth Psychological Associates or Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute
- EGD (Upper Endoscopy)

Preparing for Surgery With Medical Weight Loss
It is important to note that many insurance companies require a 3-6 month physician monitored diet prior to approving bariatric surgery. Patients approved for bariatric surgery may choose to take advantage of the Medical Management Weight Loss Programs to lose weight during their 6-month physician monitored diet period. Weight loss prior to surgery may lessen complications and recovery time.
