What Is a Pathologist?
Pathologists are doctors who diagnose diseases and health issues through the study of tissues, cells, and body fluids. They play a major role in helping your doctor decide your treatment plan.
They complete extra years of intense study so they can:
- Do diagnostic tests.
- Detect disease processes by microscope and other methods.
- Read results.
- Consult with other doctors.
Pathologists also do research and help advance health science. They're at the forefront of finding out how diseases work to improve treatments and outcomes.
Lab Experts at UPMC
Our lab care team extends beyond pathologists. Many doctors work closely to give complete care and tailor treatment to your unique needs.
Key members of your lab care team may include:
- Anatomic pathologists. They look at tissues, cells, and organs under a microscope to diagnose diseases and health issues. They also play a vital role in staging cancer.
- Blood cell pathologists. Experts in the study of blood disorders, they diagnose and closely watch health issues like leukemia, lymphoma, and anemia. They often work with cancer care doctors.
- Forensic pathologists. When a death is sudden or suspicious, they find its cause and manner. Their work is crucial in legal and investigative matters.
- Cytopathologists. They study cells to help diagnose health issues like cervical cancer through Pap smears and other tests.
- Molecular pathologists. They study genetic and molecular changes in tissues and cells.
Our teams vary based on the lab, the needs of those we treat at each, and the services we provide.
