When you have a problem with your foot, whether it's nerve pain, skin changes, misalignment, or another issue, UPMC's podiatrists can help.

Our foot experts know how painful foot conditions can be and how they can interfere with work, school, leisure, and sports. We offer timely appointments, a full range of tests, and complete treatments.

What Foot and Ankle Conditions Do We Treat?

UPMC's podiatrists diagnose and treat problems with the foot and ankle, including the muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments, nerves, and skin.

Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • Ankle or foot sprains from when ligaments are stretched too much.
  • Arthritis in the foot or ankle, which causes pain and stiffness due to swelling in the joints.
  • Athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that causes an itchy, burning, and peeling rash on the foot.
  • Achilles tendonitis, which causes painful swelling in the tendon that connects the lower leg and the heel and happens from overuse.
  • Bunions, which are bony bumps on the inner foot that occur when the big toe is out of alignment.
  • Deformities in the foot, which people may be born with or acquire from muscle imbalances or improper footwear.
  • Diabetic foot, which occurs when diabetes causes nerve damage and a loss of feeling in the foot.
  • Dislocated ankle, which happens when the ankle bone is knocked out of its normal position due to an injury or fall.
  • Flat feet, which is a lack of arch in the foot that can lead to pain, especially with activity.
  • Fractures, or breaks, in the bones of the foot or ankle.
  • Gout, a very swollen, red, and tender part of the foot that can happen from arthritis.
  • Infections in the foot.
  • Plantar fasciitis, which is heel pain due to stress on the connective tissue (fascia) that connects the heel to the toes.
  • Nerve pain in the foot, including from a neuroma (thickened tissue around the foot nerve).
  • Warts on the foot.

What Services Do We Offer?

Our advanced treatments are designed to treat your pain, improve your gait, correct misalignments, treat skin problems, and address other foot and ankle issues.

Diagnostic tests

UPMC offers advanced imaging, including MRIs, x-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds. We also have specialized tests like electromyograms to assess nerve and muscle problems in the feet.

Nerve block and electrical stimulation procedures

We offer the latest procedures to target nerve pain and tingling in the feet. These include nerve blocks, in which medication is injected near the nerve, and electrical stimulation to stop pain signals.

Diabetic foot care

UPMC’s podiatrists provide complete, routine exams of the feet for people with diabetes. We monitor changes to the skin, with reflexes, and in sensation to help prevent ulcers and other diabetes-related foot problems.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy helps you stretch and strengthen muscles in the foot, ankle, and lower leg. This relieves pressure on ligaments and tendons and supports the proper alignment of the ankle and foot. Physical therapy can help you heal from injury or surgery, resolve pain, and improve your walking or running gait.

Skin and wound care

We offer foot ulcer and wound care, as well as skin grafting for large wounds on the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists also safely and painlessly remove warts and treat athlete’s foot and other common skin problems of the feet.

Surgery

Our podiatrists offer a full range of surgeries, including fracture repair, reconstructive surgery, ankle replacement, and realignment surgery. We take the time to explain your nonsurgical and surgical options, and what you can expect for your recovery and long-term function of the foot.
