Before Your First Visit
Sleep studies
Before seeing an ENT specialist at the Division of Sleep Surgery, we suggest having an evaluation at a sleep lab. Sleep studies are part of the diagnosis process for sleep disorders.
UPMC’s Sleep Medicine Center performs sleep studies. Accredited by the Academy of Sleep Medicine, it's the only multidisciplinary sleep medicine facility in western Pennsylvania.
Once we review the results of your sleep study, we will come up with a therapeutic treatment plan.
If therapy doesn't help your snoring or sleep apnea, the ENT doctor will decide if surgery might be a good treatment option for you.
What to bring to your first visit
To prepare for your first visit with us, we ask you to provide:
- Your family medical history
- A detailed sleep history
- Health insurance information
During Your First Visit
The doctor will perform a physical exam. He or she will also check your throat and may perform a flexible endoscopy.
A flexible endoscopy is a painless test that lasts between two and three minutes.
By inserting a flexible tube with a tiny camera up the nose, the doctor will have an up-close look at the:
- Inside of the nasal cavity
- Voice box
- Tongue
- Adenoids
This will allow your doctor to provide a more thorough diagnosis of your sleep problem.
Our sleep specialists will then work with UPMC ear, nose, and throat (ENT) experts to discuss all treatment options before considering surgical intervention for snoring and sleep apnea.
