Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit at UPMC Williamsport Divine Providence Campus

Adult Inpatient Unit

Our Inpatient Unit is located on the 5th Floor of UPMC Williamsport Divine Providence Campus. It is a short-term, intensive treatment program for adults 18 and older. Services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a safe, monitored and comfortable atmosphere.

Behavioral health conditions we treat include:

  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Mood disorders
  • PTSD

An individual may be admitted to the unit once he or she receives a medical evaluation by a doctor, and it is determined that criteria have been met for acute psychiatric care. Patients are frequently admitted from an emergency department, but may be referred by their family doctor, outpatient psychiatrist or therapist. A psychiatrist provides final approval for admission. Within the first 24 hours of admission, patients receive a psychiatric evaluation, a physical examination and a comprehensive nursing assessment. Further testing is provided when deemed necessary.

Patients are encouraged to participate in the multidisciplinary therapeutic program, consisting of:

  • Patient and family-friendly environment
  • Specialization in adult and geriatric services
  • Daily assessments and treatments provided by a psychiatrist
  • Occupational, recreational and physical therapies
  • Pastoral support
  • Individualized nutrition and diabetes counseling
  • 24/7 care provided by specialty-registered nurses
  • Electroconvulsive therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Strength-based approach
  • Individualized discharge planning

Patients consistently express a high degree of satisfaction with the individualized therapeutic contact provided by the members of our experienced treatment team. Optimal recovery is achieved through involvement of family and community resources.

Older Adult Inpatient Unit

We realize that older adults often have complex needs and have sometimes experienced difficult events and significant losses that can affect their emotional well-being. The combination of social, emotional and medical issues can make the diagnosis, care and treatment of the older adult challenging.

Older adults experience many changes as they age, with stressors such as:

  • Retirement
  • Medical problems
  • Mobility limitations
  • Loss of a loved one

These events can trigger depression and anxiety or mood disorders that are better treated by specially trained psychiatric physicians, nurses and therapists.

Some symptoms revealed upon admission to the unit can include:

  • Harmful behavior to self or others
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Unmanageable or severe behavioral problems, due to a psychiatric illness

  • Delusions
  • Persistent self-neglect, due to psychiatric illness
