Welcome to the website for the UPMC McKeesport Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are excited that we are the first three-year dually accredited categorical program for both allopathic and osteopathic trainees in our region. As a community hospital, UPMC McKeesport is proud to have a robust teaching faculty and a longstanding, strong institutional commitment to graduate medical education.

UPMC McKeesport is located at the confluence of the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers and is close to the city of Pittsburgh. The area offers a variety of cultural and sport activities. Because of our unique location, our residents can choose to live in rural, suburban, or urban settings within commuting distance of the hospital.

Our residents are highly qualified and motivated individuals with diverse background experiences and a shared goal of mastering the competencies of graduate medical education. They leave here to pursue practice, hospitalist, and fellowship positions. Our core focus however is training primary care physicians.

Our faculty has a commitment to excellence in patient care and graduate medical education. They will guide and mentor you through these demanding and fulfilling years and provide you with the skills you will need to continue as a life-long learner.

We have outstanding speakers for our Medical Grand Rounds series. In addition, we have telemedicine connection with University of Pittsburgh staff, which is currently used in the areas of stroke, radiology, critical care, and dermatology. Our close relationship with the University GME leadership allows our program to continuously improve the quality of our training using the wisdom, resources, and collective experience of other training programs under the UPMC medical education umbrella.

The program is in full compliance with ACGME. We are continuously looking for ways to improve your learning and training experiences. Resident input is regularly encouraged and considered in all changes.

We offer a nurturing work environment. Our hospital is fortunate to have a welcoming group of clinical and administrative staff who support our residents as they progress through their training.

Sincerely,

Reena Karnik, MD
