Pelvic Pain

UPMC Content 3

What is Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain occurs in the lower abdomen. However, it does not always involve the female (gynecologic) organs.

Because pelvic pain has a number of causes, pinpointing the actual cause can be a long and complex process.

Diagnosing Pelvic Pain

The first step in diagnosing your pelvic pain is to undergo a pelvic exam.

Your doctor will need to ask detailed questions about your health history and your pain symptoms.

He or she may also order:

  • Imaging studies
  • Lab tests
  • A consult with other doctors

Pelvic Pain Treatment Options

Once your doctor determines the cause of your pelvic pain, treatment may include surgery or medicines.

If you need long-term, prescription pain medications, your doctor may refer you to a pain management specialist.
