Here we train highly skilled, compassionate and well-rounded physicians in a resident-focused supportive environment. We value the model of lifelong learning and physicians as teachers – in fact every resident is an integral part of the education system and is responsible for the education of his or her peers, underclassman and medical students. We have created a nurturing family environment, in which each resident supports the success of the next and fosters camaraderie.
Our curriculum provides each resident with a forward-thinking academic atmosphere that balances patient care responsibilities with adequate time for study, research and a healthy lifestyle. The Department of Medicine is committed to the pursuit of the highest standards in education, patient care and developing leaders in clinical medicine.
We are personally committed to working with each of our residents to develop an individual training experience that allows them to attain their personal career objectives – whether that be as a general internist or subspecialist in inpatient or outpatient medicine. Dr. Specht is the Director of Osteopathic Education and site director for the Osteopathic Recognized residents of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Community Osteopathic. He obtained his Master of Science in Anatomy from Penn State College of Medicine. He graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2017 and then completed his residency at UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic (now UPMC of Central Pa). Following residency, he worked as a hospitalist at other UPMC hospitals which allowed him to become a teaching faculty member and pursue his passion for medical education. He returned to UPMC Community Osteopathic as Program Director to continue to grow an already established legacy of producing great physicians. He resides in Lancaster, Pa with his wife and three children. He enjoys attending Philadelphia sporting events.
Aaron Barasch, DO
Associate Program Director and Continuity Clinic Director
Dr. Barasch is the Associate Program Director of Osteopathic Education and Continuity Clinic Director. He graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2017 and then completed his residency in internal medicine at UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic (now UPMC in Central Pa). Following residency, he has worked as a partner at Londonderry Medical Center (a private outpatient clinic) and as the assistant director of osteopathic education for UPMC since 2020. He resides in Harrisburg, Pa with his wife, two children, and English bulldog. He enjoys rooting against Dr. Specht's Philadelphia sports teams.
