Leading Innovation and Development

Our cardiothoracic surgeons lead the way in developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating diseases and disorders of the chest and foregut. Surgeons from around the world learn these techniques through special training conferences in UPMC’s state-of-the-art laparoscopic operating rooms.

A national leader, UPMC became one of the first medical centers in the nation to use minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating esophageal and lung cancers.

Our cardiothoracic transplant surgeons have performed more than 3,000 heart, lung, and combined heart-lung transplants since the program’s inception.

And we continue to innovate and pioneer new techniques in robotic surgery, artificial heart implantation, and development of artificial heart-assist devices.

Our comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment modalities, along with the continued development of these innovative techniques, positions us to deliver the highest quality care for a number of cardiothoracic diseases including:

  • Benign esophageal diseases and disorders
  • Lung diseases (i.e. COPD)
  • Thymomas and myasthenia gravis
  • Life-threatening cardiothoracic diseases in children and adults
  • Aortic and mitral valve disease
