The UPMC Administrative Fellowships are two-year programs for graduate level students with a passion for health care management.
UPMC, a world-renowned health care provider and insurer, is inventing new models of accountable, cost-effective, patient-centered care.
Fellows will spend their first year rotating with executive level leadership, participating in various projects, meetings, and initiatives through a variety of core functional rotations. The second year is flexible and allows the fellow to spend time working in an area of interest and/or organizational
need.
Administrative Fellowship Program Tracks
UPMC has Administrative Fellowship Programs within the following areas:
UPMC Health Services
UPMC Insurance Services
UPMC is highly committed to the training of administrative fellows and provides numerous opportunities and benefits for fellowship participants.
Insurance Services
The UPMC Insurance Services Division (ISD) Track focuses on advancing value‐based care, population health, and the operational excellence that underpins one of the nation’s largest integrated health plans. As the payor arm of UPMC, ISD designs and manages innovative insurance products, drives quality and affordability initiatives, and supports programs that improve health outcomes for diverse member populations. Fellows in this two‐year program gain hands‐on experience across areas such as health plan strategy, provider network development, clinical operations, analytics, and member experience. During the first year, fellows rotate through ISD’s core functions and collaborate closely with teams across HSD, Enterprises, and corporate services. This foundation prepares fellows for their second year by readying them to contribute to the design, evaluation, and implementation of initiatives that strengthen UPMC’s insurance offerings and advance its mission to provide high‐quality, accessible care.
Health Services
Hospital
The hospital component of the HSD track includes rotations across multiple UPMC hospitals in Pittsburgh’s urban core, with a central base at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, the system’s flagship academic medical center and a Level I trauma center. Fellows work directly with hospital leadership across a variety of hospitals in the Pittsburgh region, gaining exposure to clinical operations, surgical services, facilities, nursing, support services, and system-level hospital strategy and performance.
Physician Services
PSD focuses on the systemwide physicians, which includes all UPMC physicians and APPs. Fellows rotate through teams that oversee UPP (University of Pittsburgh Physicians), the academic and research‐affiliated practice group, and CMI (Community Medicine Inc.), which includes community‐based physicians without research or academic appointments. This track provides broad experience in physician operations, workforce management, practice optimization, and the business functions that support UPMC’s clinical providers across all care settings.
